Travel Ball IQ rankings are built around performance, not reputation. The same process is applied to every team, every week.
How Travel Ball IQ Rankings Work
Travel Ball IQ ranks North Carolina travel baseball teams using verified game results, opponent quality, scoring performance, and overall body of work.
The rankings are not based on opinion, reputation, social media, or tournament classification labels. They are produced by a data-driven model designed to answer a more meaningful question than simply, “Who has the best record?”
Which teams have produced the strongest results against the strongest competition?
Our exact formula is proprietary, but the principles behind the rankings are explained below.
Ranking Eligibility
A team must have at least seven verified games in the current season to appear in the published rankings.
Teams with fewer than seven games may already be tracked internally, but they remain outside the public rankings until they meet the minimum. This prevents teams from being ranked too highly, or too low, based on a small sample of results.
Reaching seven games makes a team eligible. It does not guarantee a particular ranking.
What Factors Determine the Rankings?
Travel Ball IQ evaluates each team using multiple independent rating methods and a quality-resume component.
Collectively, the system considers:
- Wins, losses, and ties
- The strength of each opponent
- How well a team performed relative to the expected result
- Runs scored and allowed
- Margin of victory, within reasonable limits
- The quality of a team’s wins
- The overall strength and depth of its schedule
- The number of games available to evaluate
No single game, tournament, or statistic determines a team’s ranking.
How Does Opponent Strength Work?
Not all wins and losses provide the same information.
Defeating a highly rated opponent is more meaningful than defeating a team with a weak body of work. Likewise, a close loss to one of the strongest teams in the age group is treated differently from a loss to a struggling opponent.
Opponent strength is calculated from the results of the teams themselves, not from reputation, tournament class, organization name, or a subjective label.
Because teams are connected through common opponents, results elsewhere can also change how a previous win or loss is evaluated. If an opponent later proves to be stronger than initially believed, that result may become more valuable.
How Is Margin of Victory Handled?
Score differential matters, but only to a point.
A decisive win provides more evidence than a one-run win. However, the system limits the additional benefit available from a large margin. Once that limit is reached, scoring more runs does not continue producing the same level of ranking benefit.
This approach recognizes convincing performances without encouraging teams to run up the score.
Do Older Games Lose Influence?
Travel Ball IQ does not apply a simple weekly expiration or arbitrary time-decay penalty to verified games from the active season.
Every verified result remains part of the team’s body of work. However, later games add more evidence and can naturally change how the complete season is evaluated. As the sample grows, one early result generally becomes less influential relative to the team’s full schedule.
Rankings are recalculated from the complete verified game set whenever an update is produced.
How Are Repeat Matchups Handled?
Every verified matchup counts, including repeat games against the same opponent.
However, repeatedly playing one team should not create the same résumé value as proving yourself against several different opponents. For that reason, the quality-resume value of repeat matchups gradually tapers.
Repeat games never disappear from the record. Their résumé influence simply decreases after multiple meetings with the same opponent.
How Are Ties Handled?
A tie counts as a tie in the team’s published record and receives partial result credit.
Its impact also depends on the strength of the opponent. Tying a highly rated team can strengthen a team’s body of work, while tying a significantly weaker opponent may have the opposite effect.
How Are Forfeits Handled?
A forfeit is included only when it is reported as an official completed result by the tournament or another reliable source.
Verified forfeits are entered using the official posted result. Administrative cancellations, unplayed games, scheduling placeholders, and games reported as “no contest” are not treated as completed games.
Because margin of victory is capped, a posted forfeit score cannot create an unlimited scoring benefit.
How Are Out-of-State Games Handled?
Verified games against out-of-state opponents count.
Out-of-state teams are not eligible to appear in the North Carolina rankings, but their results can still provide valuable evidence about the North Carolina teams that played them.
When enough verified information is available, the system evaluates the out-of-state opponent as part of the wider competitive network. A quality win does not stop being a quality win simply because the opponent is located across a state line.
Games against teams from another age division may also be considered when the opponent can be identified and the result can be verified.
Why Can a Team With a Better Record Rank Lower?
Winning percentage is important, but records do not exist in a vacuum.
For example, a team with a 12-2 record built largely against weak competition may rank below a 9-4 team that consistently played, and defeated, stronger opponents.
The rankings reward the quality of a team’s accomplishments, not just the number of wins accumulated.
A team may rank lower despite having a better record because of:
- A weaker schedule
- Fewer quality wins
- Losses to lower-rated opponents
- Repeated games against the same limited group of teams
- A smaller or less-connected body of verified results
- Weaker performance across the full schedule
The goal is not to rank records. The goal is to rank teams.
Where Do Game Results Come From?
Results are collected from publicly available and verifiable sources, including:
- Tournament-provider schedules and brackets
- Official event results
- Team schedules and other credible published sources
- Documentation submitted through the Travel Ball IQ correction process
Whenever possible, tournament records are checked for both pool-play and bracket-play completeness.
Only games that can be associated with the correct teams and verified with a final score are included. Duplicate results, future games, incomplete listings, and results that cannot be reliably matched to a team are excluded until resolved.
What If a Tournament Posts Incomplete or Incorrect Results?
Travel Ball IQ can only evaluate results that are available and can be reasonably verified.
Some tournament providers publish incomplete brackets, omit consolation games, display incorrect scores, or remove older event information. These issues can create temporary differences between a team’s actual record and the record shown in the rankings.
We actively audit event coverage and research missing results, but Travel Ball IQ cannot guarantee that every game will be available from every tournament provider.
If you identify a missing or incorrect result, please use our Submit a Correction page and include supporting information whenever possible.
How Are Corrections Reviewed?
Corrections are not automatically accepted simply because they are submitted.
Each submission is reviewed against available source material. Supporting evidence may include:
- A game record
- A screenshot showing the teams, date, and final score
- Another reliable public source
If the correction can be verified, the underlying game data will be updated and the change will be reflected in a future ranking release.
Travel Ball IQ may decline or hold a correction when the teams cannot be clearly identified, sources conflict, or the result cannot be independently supported.
When Are Rankings Updated?
Rankings are updated weekly during the active season, after new results have been collected, reviewed, and processed.
Updates may occasionally be delayed when major tournament results are incomplete or additional verification is required. The date displayed on each ranking page identifies the current published release.
Corrections received after an update has been finalized will generally appear in the following ranking release.
What the Rankings Are, and Are Not
Travel Ball IQ rankings are an objective evaluation of the verified results available at the time of publication.
They are not a prediction that one team will always defeat another. Youth baseball results can change from weekend to weekend, and no mathematical system can account for pitching availability, guest players, roster changes, injuries, or every circumstance surrounding a game.
The rankings are intended to provide a consistent, transparent, and evidence-based view of team performance, not a final judgment on any team or player.
Think We Missed Something?
If you find an incorrect score, missing game, duplicate result, or team-identification issue, please use the Submit a Correction page.
Include the event name, game date, teams, final score, and a link or screenshot supporting the requested change. Complete submissions can be reviewed much faster than messages containing only a corrected record.
